Sayulita makes an easy base for exploring the Riviera Nayarit. These are the classic day trips, all reachable in well under an hour by car.
San Pancho (San Francisco)
About five kilometres north, San Pancho is Sayulita’s quieter neighbour: a small village with a wide beach, galleries, restaurants and a relaxed, community feel. The shore break can be heavy, so it is better for walks, sunsets and experienced surfers than easy swimming. Taxis and local buses make the short trip.
Lo de Marcos
Roughly 18 kilometres north, Lo de Marcos keeps a traditional small-town atmosphere with a long sandy beach and quieter coves nearby, such as Los Venados. Come for a slow lunch and a swim away from the crowds.
Punta de Mita peninsula
South of Sayulita, the peninsula at the northern tip of Banderas Bay has calmer, south- and west-facing beaches, beginner-friendly surf spots such as La Lancha, seafood restaurants and departure points for boat tours.
Islas Marietas National Park
The Marietas Islands are a protected national park off the coast of Punta de Mita, known for seabirds such as blue-footed boobies, snorkelling and the famous Playa del Amor, often called the Hidden Beach. Visits are only possible with authorised tour operators, visitor numbers are limited, and access to the Hidden Beach depends on permits and ocean conditions, so it is never guaranteed. Book ahead in high season and confirm exactly what your tour includes.
Whale watching
From roughly late November to March, humpback whales migrate along this coast. Licensed boat tours run from Sayulita, Punta de Mita and around Banderas Bay.
Planning tips
- Start early: beaches are quieter and the sea is often calmer in the morning.
- Carry cash for small towns, parking and beach restaurants.
- Check return transport times before you leave, especially if you are taking the bus.
